The Psychoanalytic Studies Program (PSP)

The Psychoanalytic Studies Program is a two-year program of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis. It combines elements of psychoanalytic training, psychotherapy training, and scholarship to create a shared educational experience for clinicians, scholars, and others interested in psychoanalysis as a treatment modality, a theory of mind, and a research tool.

Program Features

The curriculum consists of three classes held one evening each week. Its multidisciplinary study of essential psychoanalytic concepts includes:

• Education in psychoanalytic theories of mind and their application to clinical situations.
• Continuing case conferences addressing psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.
• Opportunities to deepen self-awareness through mother-infant observation, individual supervision, and personal psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.

Local and national psychoanalytic scholars are available to work with students pursuing scholarly interests.

For students who intend to become clinical psychoanalysts, the program may count as the first two years of the four-and-a-half-year psychoanalytic training curriculum.

Schedule and Participation

• Thirty weeks of classes per year.
• Classes held on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 8:15 p.m.
• Full-time and part-time participation available.
