Membership Categories

Active

Active members may vote, hold office, serve as directors, and serve on or chair committees and other components of the Center.

Honorary

Voting members may nominate anyone who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of psychoanalysis for election as an Honorary Member.

A nomination letter, the nominee’s brief curriculum vitae, and at least three supporting letters must be submitted to the President of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis. The President forwards the nomination to the Membership Committee for review. The committee chair then reports to the Board with a recommendation concerning approval.

Honorary members are exempt from dues and assessments and may serve on committees and other components.

Corresponding

Corresponding membership may be requested by a voting member who:

• Lives and practices more than 100 miles from downtown Baltimore or Washington, DC, whichever is closer; or
• Is a voting member in good standing of a society or center recognized by the American Psychoanalytic Association or the International Psychoanalytical Association.

Corresponding members receive the privileges and responsibilities of membership but may not vote, hold elected office, or serve as elected members of committees.

Community

Community membership is intended for people who are not mental health clinicians. Community members receive the privileges of Active Members, including the right to vote, hold office, serve as directors, and serve on or chair committees and other components.

Friends

Friends are individuals who demonstrate an interest in psychoanalysis through academic training, writing, community involvement, personal experience, or another form of engagement recognized as relevant to the Center’s interests.

The Membership Committee reviews and decides upon applications for admission as Friends and periodically informs the Board of newly admitted Friends.
