Study Groups and Optional Classes

Center members are eligible to participate in “Center Day” study groups and optional classes. These groups provide high-quality psychoanalytic educational opportunities for members, trainees, and students.

Study groups support professional competence through new skills and knowledge, critical inquiry, balanced judgment, and educational activities. Topics have included Art and Psychoanalysis, Neuropsychoanalysis, and Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in the Internet Age. Continuing education credit is granted for most study groups and optional courses.

Member Support and Professional Standards

Ombudsman Committee

The Ombudsman Committee offers candidates, students, and members an informal, confidential place to discuss concerns. It can direct concerns to the appropriate resource and assist with formal complaints when needed.

Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee receives written complaints alleging unethical conduct. Its procedures include reviewing a complaint’s merits, conducting an investigation, holding hearings when necessary, and recommending an appropriate disposition. The committee follows the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Principles and Standards of Ethics for Psychoanalysts.

Colleague and Patient Assistance Committee

This committee provides candidates, students, members, and patients with a confidential resource for concerns involving illness, impairment, or other difficulties. Discussion, evaluation, intervention, or remediation may help prevent these concerns from developing into ethics complaints.

Education and Professional Development

Continuing Professional Education

Washington Center for Psychoanalysis programs provide continuing professional education credits for physicians, psychologists, and social workers. Center credits may also be submitted for LPC relicensure. Individual program information provides specific details.

Scientific Meetings

Scientific meetings and workshops addressing psychoanalytic topics and the needs of members and candidates are organized throughout each academic year. Current information and registration are available through the Center’s event calendar.

Auditing Courses

Center members may audit a Washington Psychoanalytic Institute course in the Adult or Child and Adolescent program without charge, subject to consent from the Curriculum Committee and the seminar leader or instructor.

Publications and Clinical Referrals

E-Newsletter

The E-Newsletter is an internal publication featuring issues of interest to Center members, regular reports from the president and committee chairs, and member communication about current psychoanalytic topics and events. Its editor is responsible to the Board of Directors.

Referrals

The WCP website maintains a directory of member psychoanalysts and psychotherapists who wish to receive referrals from other members or the general public.

Research and Online Resources

PEPWEB

Full members automatically receive a subscription to Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing. PEPWEB offers online access to all but the most recent issues of many leading psychoanalytic journals, selected books, and the complete Standard Edition of Freud’s collected works. Users can search the literature by author, topic, or keyword.

Virtual Community

The WCP website provides member-only features including discussion forums, a bulletin board for referrals and other services, directory search, an event calendar, online event registration, forms, and documents. Members can also use their profile pages to pay dues or program fees online.
