The Washington Psychoanalytic Institute offers comprehensive training organized around a core that integrates major theoretical schools and contemporary developments. Graduates qualify to pursue certification through the American Psychoanalytic Association.

The Institute welcomes candidates from clinical disciplines and varied academic backgrounds. It promotes collegiality among candidates and faculty and regards an open, comfortable environment as conducive to discussion and learning.

Curriculum and Clinical Training

The curriculum emphasizes the distinct value of different psychoanalytic perspectives, their clinical application, the practical study of technique, and the development of research and writing skills.

The Institute follows the tripartite training model required of institutes accredited by the American Psychoanalytic Association:

• Seminars and continuous case conferences
• Supervised psychoanalysis of at least three cases
• Personal analysis with an Institute Training Analyst or, when geographic considerations require it, a Training Analyst from another institute

Community and Academic Opportunities

As a division of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, the Institute gives candidates opportunities to participate in community outreach, including the Psychoanalytic Clinic and public education and consultation programs.

Candidates also gain additional learning and teaching opportunities through the Institute’s affiliation with George Washington University.

Professional Membership

Institute candidates are eligible for membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association. Upon graduation, they are also eligible for membership in the International Psychoanalytical Association.
