The Washington Psychoanalytic Institute offers comprehensive training organized around a core curriculum that integrates the major theoretical schools and contemporary developments. Graduates qualify for certification by the American Psychoanalytic Association.

The Institute welcomes candidates from all clinical disciplines and academic backgrounds. It encourages collegiality among candidates and faculty and regards an open, comfortable environment as conducive to free discussion and learning.

Curriculum and Clinical Training

The curriculum highlights the distinct usefulness of different psychoanalytic perspectives. It emphasizes:

• The clinical application of psychoanalytic theories
• The practical study of psychoanalytic technique
• The development of research and writing skills

The Institute follows the tripartite training model required of institutes accredited by the American Psychoanalytic Association. Training consists of:

• Seminars and continuous case conferences
• Supervised psychoanalysis of at least three cases
• A personal analysis with a Training Analyst of the Institute or, when geographic circumstances require it, another institute

Community and Professional Opportunities

As a component division of the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, the Institute gives candidates opportunities to participate in community outreach, including the Psychoanalytic Clinic and programs devoted to public education and consultation.

Candidates also gain additional learning and teaching opportunities through the Institute’s affiliation with George Washington University.

Professional Membership

Institute candidates are eligible for membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association. After graduation, they are also eligible for membership in the International Psychoanalytical Association.
