Academic Calendar

Institute classes are held on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00–7:15, September through May, for 30 weeks during the academic year. Unless otherwise notified, classes meet at the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, 4545 42nd St. NW, #209, Washington, DC 20016.

Fees

• Application fee: $100
• Matriculation fee: $250, payable upon acceptance
• Tuition for years 1 through 4: $2,600
• Tuition for each subsequent year: $1,650

Tuition is due by October 1 and may be paid in two installments, due October 1 and December 1. Failure to make these payments disqualifies a candidate from attending courses unless special arrangements for deferred payment have been made.

Financial Aid

Veterans’ Benefits

Candidates who qualify for veterans’ educational benefits, including those who have served with the U.S. Public Health Service, may be eligible for financial assistance for the first three years of the required four-year curriculum.

Candidate Assistance Fund

The American Psychoanalytic Association’s Candidate Assistance Fund provides interest-free loans of up to $5,000 to candidates training to become psychoanalysts. Loans must be repaid within a maximum of six years and are available to affiliate members of the association.

Tuition Refunds

This policy follows DCMR 16, Chapter 12, concerning proprietary schools. A refund means the return of money, cancellation of an obligation, or other extinction of debt.

1. Registration fees and other payments will be refunded in full if the candidate notifies the school within seven business days of signing the Enrollment Contract that they have decided to cancel it.
2. Refunds will be made within 30 days of the last day of attendance when the candidate provides written notice. Otherwise, refunds will be made within 30 days after the school determines that the candidate has withdrawn. Refunds are calculated from the last day of attendance.
3. If a candidate cancels before classes commence, the registration fee is forfeited, but no more than $50 will be retained. Any refund due will be issued within 30 days of the program’s start, as stated in the Enrollment Contract.
4. If a candidate withdraws after classes commence but before completing 75% of the scheduled program, the unexpended, prorated portion of tuition and other fees will be refunded. The amount is based on the ratio of weeks completed to total weeks in the program; any attendance during a week counts as a full week.
5. Withdrawal after completing 75% of the scheduled program obligates the candidate for the full amount stated in the Enrollment Agreement.
6. Any required refund to a non-immigrant alien is payable within 30 days after the Immigration and Naturalization Service certifies that the individual has departed the United States, and only in the currency of the candidate’s country of citizenship.

Registration

During the first four years, candidates are automatically registered for classes after successfully completing the previous year’s coursework. Advanced candidates must register for the school year by April 1. Late registration carries a $50 penalty.

Center members may audit a course in the Adult or Child/Adolescent Program without charge and with the seminar leader’s or instructor’s consent, except when taking a course for credit.

Society members participating for credit in the Child/Adolescent Analytic Program are charged regular Society dues plus prorated tuition, totaling the advanced-candidate tuition. These fees must be paid by August 15.

Candidates’ Manual

Each accepted candidate receives a Candidates’ Manual containing the Institute’s rules and administrative procedures. Additional clarifications or rule changes may be communicated by the Institute Council through letters and announcements.

Candidates are responsible for incorporating those updates into the manual, which serves as the Institute’s official statement of educational policies and rules. A joint Center and Institute Ombudsman Committee has three members, one of whom may be selected as the candidate’s ombudsman.

Certificates of Insurance

Every candidate must arrange for their insurance company to submit a certificate showing professional liability coverage of at least $1 million. The Institute office must receive the certificate before July each year.

Transfers of Credit

Satisfactorily completed coursework may be transferred from psychoanalytic institutes recognized by the American Psychoanalytic Association. The Institute may require additional coursework when the Candidate Progress Committee considers it necessary.
